A single large lantern gives one big, uninterrupted opening to the sky, which can feel more expansive than the same glass area broken into separate windows.

A generous lantern centred over a room floods the heart of the space with even overhead light from one large source.

Where several roof windows win

Flexibility of placement

Separate windows can be spread across the roof to light different zones — one over the worktop, one over the table — spreading daylight more evenly across a longer or irregular room.

Easy ventilation

Roof windows open easily for fresh air, and you can have some opening and some fixed. A lantern, by contrast, is usually fixed and needs an added vent or separate window for ventilation. If airflow matters, windows have the edge.

Cost

For a given glazed area, a set of roof windows often works out more economical than a large lantern, particularly on a pitched roof where they are simple to fit. Budget can be the deciding factor.

Suiting a pitched roof

On a sloping roof, windows sit flush and natural, while a lantern needs a flat or specially formed base. Windows are simply the right product for a pitch.
