A U-value measures how quickly heat passes through a building element, expressed in watts per square metre per degree (W/m²K). The lower the number, the better the insulation. A single sheet of old glass might have a U-value above 5; a modern insulated rooflight will be a small fraction of that. The catch — and it matters for compliance — is that a rooflight can be quoted with more than one U-value depending on what is being measured and how. What Part L expects from rooflights

Part L sets maximum U-values that glazing should not exceed when it is newly installed or replaced. Rooflights are treated slightly differently from vertical windows because they sit in the roof, where heat loss behaves differently. The practical points to remember are:
